Much has been written about of our new president, Barack Obama. The focus has predominantly been a political or biographical treatise. This article offers an introspective study of Obama’s soul purpose and its relationship to our collective awakening.
I begin this exploration with an analysis of his birth name and other elements within his soul blueprint. These elements comprise an individual’s energy signature and represent the inherent potentials, lessons, and karmic dispositions that one comes into this world with. The name ‘Barack’ and its variations in Swahili (Baraka), Arabic (Bariki), and Hebrew (Baruch) mean “Blessed.” Barak, another derivation of the Hebrew name, refers to lightning. His middle name, Hussein, is from the Arabic root (Hasuna) which means, “to be good." Both are names of great virtue, which imply the nature of the lessons and potentials of his soul: To bless with gracious acts.
Let us now direct our attention to the name association with lightning, as it captures the essence of Obama’s soul purpose. Metaphorically, lightning represents a flash of Truth—a flash of inspiration from the Soul that breaks down the structures of the “status quo," false power, and false reasoning. This lightning is the lightning bolt held by the Nordic God of Transformation, Thor. In the esoteric wisdom of the Tarot, lightning is the light from the Hermit’s lantern (illumination) and the power drawn from the Heavens by the Magician (self-mastery). Its power reveals all that is inauthentic and dismantles structures that have outlived their purpose. Lightning quickens the soul and reignites within us our purpose.
Barack Obama, like lightning, inspired a nation to rethink itself. His election, by the people, marked the end of an “error” and the beginning of a new era—a time of awakening to our collective soul responsibility. Will the road ahead be easy? Not likely. Our journey will be illuminating and confusing. However, it is the ability to persevere that proves our sincerity and commitment to the journey.
Other elements in Obama’s soul blueprint are also significant. These aspects are, according to the ancient Vedic chakra (energy) system, directly linked to the Heart and the two centers of Will. The highest attributes of these centers are truth, love, courage, pragmatism, Divine Will, and vision. Obama expresses innate nobility, intelligence, a strong moral sense, compassion, and oratory skill.
Upon further assessment of his profile, these qualities also point back to the past life experiences that cultivated them. Obama experienced past lives of power and leadership. He also suffered the abuse and tyranny delivered upon his people. These past life circumstances helped to shape the mission of his soul in this lifetime. They confer upon him a strong moral sense and a genuine concern for humanity.
The role that Obama’s soul elected to play in this lifetime is that again of a leader. He chose to re-express that innate power for the greater Good of All. His soul choice offers him the opportunity to heal the wound of past tyranny and abuse, which parallels the healing of the soul wound of this country. Obama has the inner capacity to be a great beacon of healing. The energies of the two centers of Will, when directed by his Heart, give him the power of positive influence through presence and language. This gift can be utilized to birth new energies of cooperation.
Words have great power, especially when coupled with strong intention. They can be used to maintain the structures of false power and separatist thinking, or they can be used to heal and build partnerships. In Obama’s inaugural address, he spoke of being willing to extend a hand if other nations are willing to unclench their fists. This comment reaffirms his spiritual mission and speaks to America’s collective soul potential of ethical leadership.
It is equally important that we are mindful of the significant numerological elements that contribute to the overall energy of this moment in history. It is no coincidence that Barack Obama was elected president at the age of 47 during the 110th Congress. Both 47 and 110, when interpreted, equate to the master number 11. Eleven is the number of new beginnings. It has the power to change history and challenges us to find the Light within ourselves.
In 2009, an 11 year, Obama became America’s 44th president in the 111th Congress. In numerology, 44 is a master number, which represents the balance between spiritual and physical power. In Obama, we see a more balanced approach to leadership and power. It is inclusive rather than exclusive or divisive. The significance of 44 also correlates to our collective lessons in responsibility and power. We are at a critical juncture and entrusted with recreating our world from a matured level of consciousness. The 111 in numerological terms is the gateway to all that is. It signals a time of release of ego based manifestations and the embodiment of Heart-based living and creation.

“It is true, political problems are not solved by love and mercy. But the world of politics is not the only world, and unless political decisions rest on a foundation of something better and higher than politics, they can never do any real good for men. When a country has to be rebuilt after war, the passions and energies of war are no longer enough. There must be a new Force, the power of Love, the power of understanding and human compassion, the strength of selflessness and cooperation... and the will to forgive. The will for reconciliation.”
It is my belief that Barack Obama is the lightning required to awaken us from the sleep of consumerism and selfishness. The task before us is great. Obama cannot do it alone. Neither can we afford to go back to sleep. All of us have a great and beautiful purpose before us. Our collective soul agreement is to birth a new era of human consciousness into being. All births involve labor. It is time to embrace our work!
